Jimin Seo came first place in the The University of Auckland Simpson Grierson Social Issues Moot

Below Jimin provides a snapshot of the experience:

“The moot court heard the appeal of the High Court decision of Attorney-General v Carter [2023] NZHC 204 (2023), in which the High Court ruled that the Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 did not give the Māori Land Court jurisdiction over determining Māori ownership rights over water. For the purposes of the moot, we argued this finding should be upheld by relying upon a narrower textual reading of the Te Ture Whenua Māori Act and policy arguments. This was a challenging position to take, as the appellants submitted strong Tikanga and Treaty-based arguments.

The biggest takeaway was learning to embrace questions from the judges. Lifting words from page and breathing life into them – I realised that this is what oral advocacy is all about.”
